The theme of this pair of Menuki is Cormorant Fishing. Cormorant Fishing is a traditional way to fish using a tamed Cormorant to catch fish. Japan and China used this method of fishing in the old days. In Japan, it started in Heian Period by aristocrats and samurai would watch this fishing style to enjoy. This set of Menuki has a vertical design of a fisherman and a Cormorant and a horizontal design of the fishing boat. There is a Kibata-mei of Motozane/Genpu but it may not be authentic. However, it remains to be a very attractive paid of Menuki.
