The theme of this Tsuba is Dragon and Phoenix. It is Mumei but has been attributed to the Hirado Tradition. In Hirado, Hizen Province was a place open to foreign trade in the late Edo Period. So this Tradition was influenced by international cultures and designs. It is referred to as "Namban." This Tsuba design shows a popular designs of that day that are not usual traditional designs and therefore was attributed to the Hirado Tradition. It has passed Hozon Tosogu. |
