| Bamboos, which grow straight and stay green even in winter, represent growth and longevity, while orchids, which have a pure and noble fragrance, represent dignity and nobility. Therefore, the Bamboo and Orchid theme was favored by literati artists. This fuchi-kashira depicts an orchid on the fuchi of a shakudo surface and a bamboo on the kashira, carved with katakiri-bori and ke-bori techniques. The metal craftsman, Saito Yoshihiko [斎藤芳彦], was born in Bunka 3 (1806). He trained at the Sonobe school [園部家] in Edo, a branch of the Goto school, and returned to his hometown of Shibata in Echigo Province to become a oficial worker for the Shibata domain.
