| This fuchi-kashira, titled “Cherry Blossoms and Sweetfish (Ayu),” bears the inscription “ōju Koganei-zu utsushi,” indicating that it was made on request as a copy of the “Koganei Cherry Blossoms (Tamagawa Embankment)” design, originally depicted by Utagawa Hiroshige. The composition is refined and well balanced, with sweetfish depicted on the fuchi and cherry blossoms on the kashira. The artist, Tōkaō Hideaki, was of the Kato family and born in Aizu-Wakamatsu. He later moved to Edo and studied under Ishiguro Masaaki, and, in recognition of his skill, was permitted to use the Ishiguro name. “Tōkaō” is his later art name. This work passed the Tokubetsu Hozon Tōsōgu shinsa in 2025. |
