| Shōei was a student of Jochiku and was formerly known by the art name Johaku. Following his master's death, he succeeded to the name of the second-generation Jochiku. This fuchi-kashira depicts a phoenix and is executed in the signature technique of the Jochiku school known as sumi-e zōgan. On a polished shibuichi ground, various colored metals (irogane), including gold, silver, and suaka, are skillfully inlaid in hira-zōgan, creating an effect reminiscent of an ink painting. The phoenix is rendered with remarkable precision and elegance, demonstrating the refined taste and technical mastery for which the Jochiku lineage is renowned. Passed the NBTHK Hozon Tosogu shinsa in 2023. |
