| The Tethered Horse Design depicts a horse tied to a tree or post. Since ancient times, horses have been closely associated with the samurai class and have frequently appeared as subjects in Japanese paintings and sword fittings. This fuchi-kashira depicts pine trees, a decorative curtain (manmaku), and tethered horses in takabori, zogan and iroe on a finely worked shakudo nanako ground. The skillful use of gold iroe creates a beautiful contrast with the dark shakudo nanako surface. The workmanship is reminiscent of the Hamano school and Kaga Goto school, making this a richly decorative and attractive fuchi-kashira. |
