| Izumo Daijo Masamitsu was born in 1802 in what is now Kitahiroshima Town as the fourth son of the swordsmith Masanaga. While his master is unclear, he was granted permission to use the Izumo Daijo signature in 1829 and became the official swordsmith for the Asano family of the Hiroshima domain in 1858. He forged swords until the age of 75, with works dating to 1875. He passed away at the age of 78 in 1879 (Meiji 12). His swords feature well-forged, dense jigane and predominantly straight hamon with long nakago which was the charactristic of the Bakumatsu period. This katana was forged by Masamitsu at the age of 67, during his mature period. It was registered as the first year of torokusho by Hiroshima Prefecture in 1951 (Showa 26). It passed the Hozon Token shinsa in 2010. |
