Kawachi no Kami Kunisuke II, widely known as “Naka-Kawachi” because he stands between the first and third generations, is a highly regarded Osaka smith. He was the legitimate son of Kunisuke I, and his younger brothers included Musashi no Kami Kunitsugu, Higo no Kami Kuniyasu, and Ise no Kami Kuniteru. He was born in 1628 (Kanei 5) and died in 1698 (Genroku 11) at the age of 71.His workmanship is characterized by a tightly forged ko-itame hada and a distinctive, flamboyant hamon known as kobushi-gata choji-ba. This example is an excellent work that clearly displays the lively and brilliant style typical of Naka-Kawachi.It passed the Tokubetsu Hozon Token shinsa in 2008. The sword is accompanied by a black roiro-nuri saya uchigatana koshirae fitted with peacock and phoenix-themed metal fittings.
