| Although ubu and unsigned, with the original signature lost to corrosion, this sword has been attributed to the Shimada school, represented by such smiths as Yoshisuke and Sukemune. The jihada is a flowing ko-itame, while the hamon displays a vigorous ō-midare with a hitatsura-like appearance in the lower half, becoming a more restrained notare-midare in the upper half. The bōshi approaches an ichimai style. These features support the attribution to the Shimada school, a group of smiths working in the Bizen tradition. Particularly intriguing is the registration certificate issued in Osaka in 1951, often referred to as an “early daimyō registration,” which records the blade as “Signature Unknown (possibly Hatakeda Morichika).” This historical notation adds further interest to the sword. The blade is accompanied by an uchigatana koshirae with a brown urumi-nuri lacquered saya. Passed NBTHK Hozon Token shinsa in 2025. |
