| Tsunehira Kambayashi was born in 1949 in present-day Tsuruoka City, Yamagata Prefecture. In 1967, he became a student of Miyairi Yukihira, a Living National Treasure. He received his swordsmith license in 1973 and, in the same year, won the Doryoku-shō (Effort Award) at the NBTHK's Shinsaku Meitō Ten with his first exhibited work. Thereafter, he received Special Awards on nine consecutive occasions and, at the age of thirty-six in 1985, was granted Mukansa status. In 1986, he established his forge in Hasedō, Yamagata City. In 2008, he was designated a Yamagata Prefectural Intangible Cultural Property Holder (Traditional Craft Techniques). He is currently 77 years old. With a blade length of slightly over 2 shaku 1 sun, this work may be regarded as a kodachi. The Bizen-inspired notare-midare hamon and the somewhat ikubi-style kissaki suggest that it was made in the style of the celebrated Kamakura-period smith Niji Kunitoshi. Forged when Kambayashi was fifty-two years old, the blade demonstrates the mature skill and refined craftsmanship of an accomplished master swordsmith. The sword is mounted in an elegant Higo koshirae, making it a complete and highly attractive example of modern Japanese sword craftsmanship. |
