Other Info
Sukemitsu was originally Yokoyama Kijūrō. Born in 1820 in Aoyama, Edo, he aspired to become a swordsmith and studied under the Yokoyama group of Bizen Osafune swordsmiths in the Sukesada lineage, later adopting the Yokoyama family name and the smith name Sukemitsu. In 1849, through the recommendation of Tokukatsu Katsumura, a swordsmith of the Mito Domain, he was appointed as an official swordsmith to the Mito Domain. By order of Lord Nariaki, he was invited to work at the weapons manufacturing facility established at Shirahatayama. He became known as a highly skilled smith in the Bizen tradition and trained several students. He died in 1873 at the age of 54 at his residence in Hachiman, below Shirahatayama in Mito. This blade was forged in 1854, when Sukemitsu was 34 years old. It is a powerful work reflecting the turbulent spirit of an era moving rapidly toward political and social upheaval. Passed the NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Token shinsa in 2021. Accompanied by an uchigatana koshirae with a shuro-mijin-nuri saya.
