| Puppy motifs were used on sword fittings as a subject expressing loyalty and endearing charm. During the reign of the fifth shogun, Tokugawa Tsunayoshi (1680-1709), known as the “Dog Shogun,” dogs were cherished at Edo Castle as lap dogs and companion dogs. This kogai depicts a three-puppy, featuring adorable puppies inlayed in gold, silver, and shakudo tones on a shakudo with nanako pattern ground. It is mumei, but attributed to the Waki Gotō school and passed the Hozon Tosogu shinsa in 2025. |
