The legendary Chinese Tang Dynasty monks Hanshan and Shide are legendary figures from the Tang dynasty who are said to have lived at the Kokusei Temple on Mount Tiantai and studied under Zen master Hokan. They were known for their eccentric behavior and were said to be incarnations of Manjusri and Samantabhadra. Their bohemian personality appearance combined made them a popular subject for painting among Zen monks. This kozuka depects only Kanzan. It comes with a certificate of Tokubetsu Kicho Kodogu issued in 1976 that mentioned this kozuka was made by one of the metalworkers among the Hamano school. The Hamano school was founded by Hamano Shozui [浜野政随] (1696-1769), a disciple of Nara Toshinaga [奈良利寿]. Master Masatsugu opened the school in Kanda, Edo, and trained many disciples, producing many famous metalworkers. The Hamano school had a major influence on metalwork up until the end of the Edo period.
