| The peony, noble and beautiful, is called the king of flowers and symbolizes longevity as an auspicious bloom. The sacred lion, to suppress the lion-body parasite that threatens its life, bathes in the night dew dripping from the peony flower to maintain invincibility. The sacred lion greets the morning beneath the peony blossoms, and the peony flower becomes its place of refuge. Thus, the peony and sacred lion has been a popular theme since ancient times. This kozuka is an original peony and sacred lion design with gold relief inlay. While not from the main lineage, it likely belongs to the Goto school. A charming kozuka, it is mumi but attributed to the the Kyo-kinko school. It passed the Tokubetsu Hozon Tosogu shinsa in 2002. |
