Other Info
It is said that an elephant first appeared in the streets of Edo in 1729 during the mid-Edo period. Elephants were sent to Japan on "Nanban ships" and were accompanied by Nanban people, and people must have been astonished by the sight of the elephant moving its huge, long trunk. This set of menuki depicts an elephant and a Nanban person. The common people of Edo must have felt awe.
