| In the appraisal of Kyoto metalwork, the unusual orientation of the shishi’s head may have led to the judgment that it is not by the Gotō school. The repoussé katachibori modeling shows depth on the reverse, and the base plate is of good thickness; the energetic placement of the legs and the overall posture possess a refined dignity.I would regard it as a solid gold shishi menuki of a Gotō-related lineage dating to the early Edo period.Passed NBTHK Hozon Tōsōgu shinsa in 2012. |
