| This work is a pair of solid gold menuki depicting a phoenix and a court cap (kanmuri). The phoenix, a graceful auspicious motif symbolizing peace, is believed to appear when a virtuous ruler governs the land. Together with the accompanying court cap, the design forms a refined and dignified composition. The ground is of solid gold, exhibiting a soft luster and a sense of weight. The carving does not overly imitate classical styles, instead showing a well-balanced finish with strong decorative appeal. The period of manufacture differs in character from works made for practical use in the Edo period or early Meiji period, and is considered to be of a later, modern period. Nevertheless, it is an impressive piece, notable for both its design and craftsmanship, with a strong sense of presence and weight. |
