Other Info
Naruki Issei [成木一成] was born in Gifu Prefecture in 1931. He studied under Takahashi Kaishu [高橋介州]. He personally collected iron sand from all over the country and worked to recreate the elegant texture of the iron using his own tatara ironmaking process. He was also a leading contemporary tsuba craftsman, attempting to revive the yakite-kusarakashi technique for surface treatment of the iron. In 1831, he was recognized as a holder of an intangible cultural property by Nakatsugawa City. In 1986, he was awarded the Medal with Yellow Ribbon. In 2009, he was recognized as a Mukansa [無鑑査] by the NBTHK. He passed away in 2022 at the age of 91. This large kogatana (blade length 14.6 cm) was made by the master contemporary tsuba craftsman Naruki Issei. The inscription: "Made by Issei, ni/tow [一成造二] " suggests that the "ni" (two) refers to his second work. This is a rare item with a copper base gold foiled habaki and housed in a shirasaya scabbard.
