| This piece is a kogatana by Hōki no Kami Masayoshi, made at the age of 82 (1814), preserved in shirasaya and fitted with a solid silver habaki. The signature is engraved within the groove (hi). Nie is present throughout the jihada and hamon.Masayoshi was the son of the second-generation Masayoshi (正良), born in 1733 (Kyōhō 18), and he died in 1818 at the age of 86. After his father’s death, he succeeded as the third-generation Masayoshi. In 1789 (Kansei 1), he was granted the title of Hōki no Kami on the same day as Oku Motohira—who received the title of Yamato no Kami—and at that time he changed the characters of his name from 正良 to 正幸, both read “Masayoshi.” He is rated as a jōjō-saku swordsmith. |
