| This piece is a kogatana by Motooki (first generation), preserved in shirasaya, as indicated by the style of the signature. The hamon is a pointed gunome-midare.The first-generation Motooki initially studied under the third-generation Michitoki, and later went to Edo, where he became a student of Suishinshi Masahide and changed his name to Hidekuni. Recognized for his superior skill, he entered the service of the Aizu domain. In 1792 (Kansei 4), by order of the domain lord, he traveled to Satsuma Province, where he studied the Sōshū tradition forging methods under Oku Motohira. In 1793 (Kansei 5), he adopted the name Motooki and returned to Aizu.He was granted a stipend of five persons’ allowance and seven koku of rice, and around 1813 (Bunka 10), he became the head swordsmith of the Aizu domain. He died in 1824 (Bunsei 7) at the age of 71. |
