| This piece is a kogatana by Yokoyama Sukenao of Bizen Osafune, preserved in shirasaya. The hamon is gunome-midare with muneyaki.Sukenao belonged to the Yokoyama school, in which the character “Suke” (祐) was used as a common element in their names, such as Sukenao, Sukenaga, Sukekane, Suketaka, and Sukehira. From the style of the signature, this work is likely to be by Shūsui-shi Sukenao (first generation), the younger brother of Sukehira. He is said to have passed away in 1848 (Kaei 1) at the age of 80. |
