Swordsmith Yamaguchi Kiyofusa [山口清房] is a contemporary master swordsmith. Born in 1932, he lives in Morioka, Iwate Prefecture. In 1964, he became a desciple of Living National Treasure Sumitani Masamine [隅谷正峯], and in 1969, he was approved to make swords. In 1970, he exhibited his work at the Shinsaku-meito, New Swords Exhibition for the first time, winning several special prizes and in 1986, he was recognized as a Mukansa swordsmith [無鑑査刀匠]. In 1993, Yamaguchi was recognized as an intangible cultural asset of Iwate Prefecture (Japanese sword making techniques). This work was made at the peak of his career at the age of 82. It has a beautiful reverse choji-midare hamon. The jigane has a moist, konuka-hada with clear utsuri rising from the reverse choji hamon. Although he is still passionate about sword making, he is now 92 years old and has decided to part with it, so this masterpiece tanto was forged with hadakayaki, without tsuchioki was directly transferred to me by him. |
