| This tanto bears an inscription in regular script on the omote-side reading “Made by Nagashige of Shimodate, Hitachi Province,” and in cursive script on the back-side reading “On an auspicious day in February of the fifth year of Kaei (1852), the year of the Water Rat.” Details about Nagashige are unknown, but he may have been a Shimodate domain swordsmith associated with Shinkei Tsunemitsu [心慶胤光] or Seki Zenjō's family member Chikunori [関善定家近則], both of them were desciple of Naotane [直胤] in Hitachi Province and inscribed cursive scripts. Although there is a slight flaw at the edge on the omote-side, but overall it is well-made and highly significant as a historical sword. It passed the Hozon Token shinsa in 2023.
