| Hiroyoshi was a line of swordsmiths whose founder is said to have moved from Yamashiro Province to Hōki Province around the Bunmei era (1469–1487) in the mid-Muromachi period. The school is traditionally regarded as descending from Tsunahiro of the Sōshū tradition. The Hiroyoshi lineage later divided into the Sainoo and Mita families and flourished in Hōki Province during the Sengoku period. Several generations of Hiroyoshi remained active until around the Enpō era (1673–1681) of the early Edo period. Although this blade bears no personal name, the excellent condition of the nakago, together with the style of the chisel work in both the signature and the date inscription, Tenshō 10 (1582), suggests that it was made by Kansuke Hiroyoshi of the Sainoo family. The sword is accompanied by an aikuchi koshirae with a brown lacquer saya decorated with black maki-e of ivy vines. It passed the NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Tōken shinsa in 2017. |
