Orchids are a favorite subject of literati, and along with plum, bamboo, and chrysanthemum, they are called as four noble flowers because of their beauty and elegance. The design of this tsuba is a popular, which depicts orchids with relief engraving and opework techniques. The artist, Inoue Kiyotaka [井上清高], is the first head of the Inoue family. He became a metal artisan for the Choshu domain in 1790. This is a sophisticated tsuba. It passed the Hozon Tosogu shinsa in 2024. |
