Other Info
This tsuba is attributed to the Shonai school and depicts a lion (shishi) and peony, a classic auspicious motif. The lion (shishi) is rendered in bold takabori, with its body covered in finely carved curling hair, creating a dynamic impression. The peony is richly decorated with thick gold nunome-zogan, giving it an elegant presence. The iron plate, in a gently rounded mokko-gata form, shows a slightly rough yet tasteful texture. The carving is not overly refined but rather powerful and expressive, reflecting the high level of craftsmanship of regional metalwork. The piece achieves an excellent balance between decoration and overall composition. This tsuba passed NBTHK Hozon Tosogu shinsa in 2021.
