Shōami Shigehiro was a member of the Akita Shōami school active during the mid-Edo period, around the Genroku and Kyōhō eras (late 17th to early 18th century). His works are generally skillfully executed in the traditional Shōami style. He is believed to have been a tsuba maker descended from either the Shōami craftsmen or the Saotome armor-makers who accompanied the Satake clan when they were transferred from Mito to Akita in the early Edo period. Some references describe Shigehiro as a pupil of the Gotō master Tsūjō, but this attribution is now generally regarded as doubtful based on the characteristics of his surviving works. On the other hand, Shigehiro produced guribori carvings executed in the same technique developed by the celebrated Akita master Shōami Denbei Shigeyoshi, suggesting a close relationship between the two craftsmen. It is thought that Shigehiro may originally have served as an assistant to Denbei and later established his own workshop when the second-generation Dennai Shigetaka entered the service of the Satake clan as Denbei's assistant in 1698 (Source: Studies on Akita Tsuba Makers and Swordsmiths – Posthumous Manuscripts of Tsurutarō Sugawara). This tsuba displays an exceptionally original design, particularly in the distinctive rendering of the swords and the unusual shape of the seppadai. The bold composition and inventive treatment of traditional motifs make it a work of considerable artistic merit and a fine representative example of the Akita Shōami tradition. Passed NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Tōsōgu shinsa in 2024.
