| The traditional landscape theme (rōkaku-sansui, or pavilions in a mountain landscape) represents an idealized world where cultivated gentlemen live in harmony with nature, free from the concerns of ordinary life. The artist, Takase Eiju, is said to have been a student of the first-generation Genpu. He was from Mito, and his son was the metalworker Eizui. This tsuba depicts a refined landscape with pavilions, executed on a polished shibuichi ground. The delicate usunikubori carving skillfully creates a convincing sense of depth and perspective, demonstrating the artist's exceptional craftsmanship. It has passed the NBTHK Tokubetshu Hozon Tosogu shinsa in August 2024. |
