| This round iron tsuba, without hitsu-ana, depicts shinobugusa with gracefully extending branches and delicately divided leaves carved in low relief. The NBTHK certificate identifies the motif as “Shinobugusa,” and the tranquil and elegant foliage is highly stylized, giving the work a distinctive charm. The signature reads “Bushū-jū Umetada Tachibana Shigeyoshi saku.” There are differing opinions as to whether this metalworker was the same person as Umetada Tadayoshi of Nishijin, Kyoto. Slight traces of gold nunome-zogan remain on the rim, suggesting the more decorative appearance the tsuba would originally have possessed. It passed the NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Tosogu shinsa in 1997. |
