| This relatively small, round iron tsuba features a Hishi Karigane-tsunagi design, combining vertical diamond motifs with stylized wild geese in ji-sukashi. The diamond motifs form the central framework of the design, with the stylized geese skillfully linked around them. Although geometric and orderly in composition, the design conveys a sense of movement and variation. The well-forged iron has a deep, dark tone, and the slightly rounded square rim shows visible tekkotsu. The powerful openwork and well-balanced, symmetrical composition give the tsuba the sturdy and archaic elegance characteristic of Owari sukashi. Judging from the quality of the iron and the style of workmanship, it was probably made around the early Edo period. |
