| Akita Shoami was a branch of the Shoami school that flourished in Akita during the Edo period and produced many fine works, particularly under the first-generation Shoami Denbei. This tsuba is thought to date from around the mid-Edo period and is made of iron in a vertical round shape. Irregular curving lines, resembling the trails left by insects crawling or eating their way through the surface, are carved across the entire plate. Traces of colored metal inlay remain here and there, adding subtle variation to the dark iron ground. The dote-mimi gives the tsuba a substantial appearance, while the simple yet distinctive design creates a unique character. Although mumei, it was attributed to the Akita Shoami school and passed the NBTHK Hozon Tosogu shinsa in 2025. |
