This swordsmith, Hiromoto [弘元], was active during the late Edo Period in Nihonmatsu [二本松], Mutsu Province. He studied his forging skills from Master swordsmith Suishinshi Masuhide [水心子正秀] in Edo and became an official swordsmith of the Nihonmatsu Clan. He received the title of "Mutsu no Suke [陸奥介]" in 1821. He passed away in 1843 at the age of 67. Hiromoto was famous for forging the older sword styles that his teacher Suishinshi forged in order to restore the forging method of Koto (Old Swords) from the philosophy of revivalism, and practical Japanese swords started to be made again. This wakizashi has a well-forged, beautiful Komokume jigane, and Oh-gunome-midare, resemble Toran hamon. The nakago file shows katte-agari file which is characteristic of this craftsman with rare Ko-zutsumi kesho file, suggesting that this wakizashi was made with Sukehiro [助廣] in mind. There are forging lines in the blade under the yokote, but the overall quality should be more than expective. This is an excellent wakizashi by Hiromoto, who was in his prime at the age of 40. There is a sayagaki written by Yoshikawa Koen (Yoshikawa Kentaro [皎園・吉川賢太郎]) (1981). It comes with a wakizashi koshirae with black lacquered saya. It has passed the Tokubetsu Hozon Token shinsa in 2024. |
