This swordsmith, Koyama Munetsugu [固山宗次], was born in 1803 in Shirakawa, Mutsu Province. He became disciple of Kato Tsunahide [加藤綱英] from the Yonezawa Clan. In 1823, he worked for the Matsudaira Family in Shirakawa. In 1829, he followed the Matsudaira Family to Kuwana, Ise. In 1831 he moved to Edo. In 1845, he received the title of Bizen no Suke. He passed away in 1872 at the age of 70. He was the Jojosaku rank and held the highest reputation as a swordsmith forging Bizen-Den. This wakizashi was probably made with the intention of making a reproduce of the Oei Bizen sword. It is a masterpiece from the prime of life when Munetsugu was 51 years old. There is a sayagaki written by Kanzan-sensei, early spring day, Showa 42, 1967. It has passed the Tokubetsu Hozon Token shinsa in 2020. |
