Other Info
This swordsmith, Hozumi Hirochika [穂積弘近] resident of Suifu, Joyo was born and was active in Mito, Hitachi Province. He was active in the Mid Edo Period. It is not clear who his teacher was but he signed his family name "Hozumi" so he was likely a Samurai as well. This Wakizashi was forged in 1784 and comes with its original Koshirae with a black lacquer wrinkled leather wrap Saya. The Tsuba's theme is a Sacred Jewel. It was signed by the swordsmith Hirochika. The other fittings have the themes of clouds and lighting. All the items and the themes together gives the Dragon impression. On the Fuchi, it has a Mei with Ippoken. The Ippoken was a "Go" of Chiba Mototane. Mototane was born in Dewa Province and moved to Edo where he learned his metalwork skills from the famous Ishiguruo Masatsune. Later he became a student of Okawa Motosada, a Mito craftsman. Later he returned to Dewa and became an official worker of the Rokugo Family, Honjo Clan. This Wakizashi was ordered by Nakamura Sadashiro. The history of this swordsmith isn't clear, however, there is literature that shows there was a Samurai in the Honjo clan. Meaning this Wakizashi has an interesting historic story of its origins. It has passed the Hozon Token shisa in 2023.
