| Masayoshi [正幸] was the son of the second-generation Masayoshi [正良]. He was born in 1733 (Kyoho 18) and died in 1818 (Bunsei 1) at the age of 86. After his father’s death, he succeeded as the third-generation Masayoshi [正良].In 1789 (Kansei 1), he was granted the title of Hoki no Kami on the same day as Oku Motohira—one of the leading Satsuma Shinshinto smiths alongside him (Motohira received the title Yamato no Kami). From that time, he changed his name to Masayoshi [正幸] (read the same as Masayoshi [正良]).He is ranked as a Jōjō-saku swordsmith, the second highest rank after Saijō-saku.This blade was made when Masayoshi was 63 years old and clearly displays his characteristic style, with a powerful and vigorous presence. It was registered in Kagoshima Prefecture in 1951 (Showa 26), and in 2025 it passed the Tokubetsu Hozon Token shinsa. |
