| This work bears a two-character signature “Kunikane” and is attributed to the second generation Yamashiro no Kami Kunikane. He was the eldest son of the first generation Yamashiro Daijo Kunikane, born in Keicho 17 (1612). He succeeded to the second generation in Shoho 2 (1645) at the age of 34, received the title of Yamashiro no Kami in Kanbun 7 (1667), and passed away in Kanbun 12 (1672) at the age of 61.The workmanship of both the jigane and hamon closely resembles that of the first generation, and his skill approaches that of his father, who is ranked as a saijo-saku smith. He is regarded as a jojo-saku smith of very high ability. This blade is notable for its beautiful masame-hada. However, rather than the typical Yamato-den suguha, it displays a choji-midare with thick nie, making it a rare example. It is an outstanding masterpiece that demonstrates a very high level of craftsmanship. It passed the Tokubetsu Hozon Token shinsa in 2000. |
