| This wakizashi is signed and dated “Made by Hyōkichi, a resident of Mito,” with a date of a day in the Fourth Month, Kansei 8 (1796). About two-thirds of the tang is finished in a decorative yasurime style, combining kiri, sujikai, and gyaku-sujikai, making it a rare example.Hyōkichi is not recorded in standard references, making it intriguing to consider whether this was a work made as an avocation by a samurai or an early signature. It is a Mito sword of considerable documentary interest. |
