| Sukemitsu, whose given name was Kijuro, was born in Aoyama, Edo, in Bunsei 3 (1820). Aspiring to become a swordsmith, he studied under the Yokoyama school of Bizen Osafune in the Sukesada tradition. He later took the surname Yokoyama and the smith name Sukemitsu. In Kaei 2 (1849), through the recommendation of Katsumura Norikatsu, a swordsmith of the Mito domain, Sukemitsu was appointed a swordsmith to the Mito domain and granted a stipend of seven and a half persons. He died in Meiji 6 (1873) at his residence in Mito Hachiman at the age of 54. This is a robust small wakizashi made by Sukemitsu at the age of 36, in the prime of his career, with a dignified and spirited appearance. It passed the NBTHK Hozon Token shinsa in 1994. The blade is accompanied by its proper black lacquered saya wakizashi koshirae. |
