| As indicated on the certificate, this work is by the third-generation Echizen Yasutsugu, as can also be recognized from the distinctive form of the character “Tsugu” (継) in the signature. The third-generation Echizen Yasutsugu was the third son of the first-generation Yasutsugu and the younger brother of the second generation. After the death of the second generation, a dispute arose over succession to the family. The second generation’s legitimate son, Umanosuke, entered the service of the Shogun’s household and became the third-generation Edo Yasutsugu, whose line continued for twelve generations. Meanwhile, Shirōuemon, the younger brother of the second generation, became the third-generation Echizen Yasutsugu, establishing the Echizen line that continued for nine generations. This wakizashi is shinogi-zukuri. It has a robust form with a slightly ikubi-style chū-kissaki, wide mihaba, and moderate sori. The jigane is a dense itame mixed with mokume, with ji-nie. The hamon is notare mixed with small gunome, with ashi. The bōshi is straight with a small rounded tip and a short return. The nakago is ubu and bears the Aoi crest. The sword was registered in Miyagi Prefecture in 1951 under registration number 548. Such an early registration from 1951, commonly referred to as a “daimyō registration,” suggests that the sword has a distinguished provenance. The sword passed Tokubetsu Hozon Tōken Shinsa in December 2025. |
