This swordsmith, Suketoshi [祐利] from Kurume, Chikugo Province, was a disciple of Yokoyama Kaga no suke Sukenaga [横山加賀介祐永] of Bizen, and was a official swordsmith of the Kurume domain from the end of the Edo period to the early Meiji period. He served the tenth domain lord, Arima Yorito [有馬頼永], who was known as a wise ruler. Although he was not relatively well known to the public, he was one of the leading swordsmiths of Chikugo province during the end of the Edo period, and was one of the people who became famous, although only for one generation, due to the Sword Abolition Edhict. This katana has a neat and tidy appearance, with koitame masa-nagare forging and a chu-suguha hamon. It is in good condition. It is currently certified as a Koshu Tokubetsu Kicho Token of the 1981, but is considered to be a Tokubetsu Hozon Token. |
