This katana is a work of Katsukuni [勝国] (the seventh generation, Matsudo Eijiro, passed away in 1880) of the Darani [陀羅尼]lineage, dating from 1868, the fourth year of the Keio era. Katsukuni were official swordsmith of the Kanazawa Domain in Kaga Province. The first generation was the son of Zenzaburo Ieshige [家重]and took the name Zenzaburo. He received the title of Iyo Daijo and was known as the foremost swordsmith of the Darani lineage, and his hamon/temper style was so colled 'Sanbon-sugi', the regular three-cedar blade pattern. The fourth, fifth, and sixth generations of Katsukuni produced few works due to the decline in demand for swords during the peaceful times. Katsukuni, who made this sword, was the last Katsukuni from the end of the Edo period, the demand for swords increased. Its sword hamon resembles a Sanbon-sugi, three-cedar style. It comes with a sturdy koshirae/scabbard of a black diagonal brushstroke lacquered saya/scabbard. It passed the Tokubetsu Hozon Token shinsa in December 2024. |
