Bizen swords from the Sengoku period, the final period of the Koto period, are collectively known as Sue-Bizen, and families with the same school and name, such as Katsumitsu, Munemitsu, Tadamitsu, Sukemitsu, Norimichi, Norimitsu, Kiyomitsu, and Sukesada, worked on making many swords to meet the demands of war. Sukemitsu [祐光] also existed in Kozori school during Nanbokucho period, but the first generation was said to have been made around the Eikyou period (1429-1441). This sword does not have a zokumyo, specific name but considering the forged year of Tenbun 10(1541), it may be by Shin'emonnojo Sukemitsu [新右衛門尉祐光], who left behind works dating Tenbun 2 and 6. Sukemitsu's works from the Tenbun period are quite rare. This is a sturdy sword from Sue-Bizen, Osafune Sukemitsu, that passed the Sengoku period. It passed the Hozon Token shinsa in 2022. |
