Norimune [徳宗] was born in 1795 (Kansei 7) as the son of Sekiguchi Norimasa, a samurai of the Mito domain. He later studied under the first Norichika/Tokurin [徳鄰], and in 1841 (Tempo 12) was employed by Lord Retsuko [烈公] and became a Mito domain swordsmith. He forged swords as the head swordsmith at the Shirahatayama Weapons Factory of the Mito domain and trained many disciples. Katsumura Norikatsu/Tokukatsu [徳勝] was a desciple of Norimune. He died in 1873 (Meiji 6). He specialized in Bizen-den choji hamon blades. This katana was likely forged at Shirahatayama in 1852 (Kaei 5) when Norimune was 57 years old and in the prime of his career. The nakago/tang is sadly decayed, but the blade is in good condition. It passed the Hozon Token shinsa in 2024. |
