Sukesada [祐定] is the name of a swordsmith representing Bizen Province in the late Muromachi period. This katana was made in 1576 (Tensho 4) and inscribed with Made by Sukesada of Osafune Bizen [備前国] Province, not Osafune Bishu [備州]. It has the midare-hamon characteristic of late Bizen swourds, which was all the rage during the Sengoku period. This katana has high midare hamon in the lower half, while gentle hamon in the upper half especially around monouchi part. This hamon pattern was designed with actual battle to prevent breakage at the monouchi part. It passed the Hozon Token shinsa in March 2025. |
