wano Michitoshi [岩野道俊] was a disciple of Michiyoshi [道賀], a native of Owari Province, who was a disciple of the Aizu swordsmith Michitoki [道辰]. He studied in Edo and took the go-name Banryusai. He lived in Morioka, Mutsu Province, and was a official swordsmith of the Morioka domain. He also forged in Shitaya, Edo. His works remains date from 1850 (Kaei 3) to 1885 (Meiji 18). Considering the mei inscription, this katna was made in 1861 (Bunkyu 1) at the foot of Toeisan, during Michitoshi's prime, and made in Shitaya, Edo. It is a magnificent and beautiful masterpiece and passed the Hozon Token shinsa in 1988. |
