This Katana was forged by Izumi no Kami Kunisada, 2nd generation, also known as Inoue Shinkai. The features of the Mei and the Tokubetsu Hozon Token certificate confirms this fact. This Mei Izumi no Kami Kunisada was forged of Inoue Shinkai instead of the first generation as the first generation became older. So we refer to this Mei as "Shinkai Kunisada." Inoue Shinkai was born in 1631 as the second son of Izumi no Kami Kunisada, first generation, also known as Oya Kunisada. When he was round 21 years old, Shinkai forged instead of his father with his father's Mei. In 1652, his father passed away and Shinkai received the title of Izumi no Kami. In 1672, he changed his tradename as Shinkai from Kunisada. He passed away in 1682 at the age of 53. He was the top rank "Saijo Saku" and "Owazamono" swordsmith, the same as the swordsmith Sukehiro. Both were swordsmiths among the Osaka Shinto. This Katana was forged sometime between 1658 to 1661 when he was around the age of 30. This is a brilliant sword and passed the Tokubetsu Hozon Token shinsa in 2022. |
