Other Info
This work is by the first-generation Yukihiro, who carved the character “Hiro” in its correct (standard) form in his signature. He was the second son of Yoshinobu and a grandson of the first-generation Tadayoshi, as well as the younger brother of the first-generation Masahiro. In 1648, he received the title Dewa Daijō, and in 1663 he was promoted to Dewa no Kami. In 1650, he traveled to Nagasaki, where he studied foreign-style forging techniques from Hisatsugu, a smith who practiced Oranda-kitae, and from Yakushiji Tanenaga. He then adopted forging methods of Western origin and added the inscription “Oranda-kitae saku” (“made in the Western style”) to his works.Later, he also learned Bizen Ichimonji-style techniques from the Ishidō school smith Noriyoshi (Shirōbei), and expressed this influence by adding the single character “Ichi” to his signature. He passed away in 1683 at the age of 66.This blade shows a fine konuka-hada with ji-nie and chikei, and a notare mixed with gunome-midare hamon. The boshi is straight with a refined ko-maru turn-back. It is a polished and elegant work that well represents the refined style of the first-generation Yukihiro. The scabbard bears a sayagaki by Kanzan Sensei, noting “with the character ‘Ichi,’ showing a mixed midare style,” dated early summer of 1971. The blade was designated Hozon Token in 2009.
