This sword was made by the second generation Katsumura Masakatsu [勝村正勝]. The first Masakatsu became an apprentice to Katsumura Tokukatsu/Norikatsu [徳勝] at the age of ten. At the age of sixteen, he went to Edo with his teacher Tokukatsu and studied under Hosokawa Masayoshi [細川正義], then Koyama Munetsugu [固山宗次], and then Ishido Korekazu [石堂是一]. He became the son-in-law of his teacher Tokukatsu's second daughter, changed his surname to Katsumura, and became a swordsmith for the Mito domain in 1869 (Meiji 2). He passed away in 1914 (Taisho 3). The second Masakatsu was the son of the first Masakatsu. He was born in Mito in 1881 (Meiji 14), and forged swords in Mito. His style was the family tradition of Yamato-den Masame forging, with a suguha and ko-gunome hamon. He was a swordsmith commissioned by the Army. He passed away in 1947 (Showa 22). This sword is a Iwaizashi, a celebration sword given to a samurai boy on his fifth birthday, the Shichigosan ceremony. It is also called a chigozashi. The silver habaki was specially made by Kitagawa Hokusen (the second generation) of Mito Metalworker. A rare piece. |
