Sōkan [宗寛] was born in Shirakawa, Ōshū, in the early Bunsei era (1818). Around the fifth year of Kaei (1852), he went to Edo and became a disciple of Koyama Munetsugu [宗次]. He later became a senior disciple, lived in Fukagawa, Edo, and served as a craftsman for the Koga domain in Shimōsa Province. From the first year of Ansei (1854), he used the go-name Tairyūsai [泰龍斎], and from the fourth year of Ansei (1857), he began inscribing his signatures in clerical script style. He passed away in 1883. This work is an early Sōkan tanto with a two-character signature in regular script. While the straight hamon is unclear, the custom-made tanto koshirae with a black lacquered fuemaki-nuri/pattern saya which fuchi-kashira and kozuka were made by Ōmori Teruhiko [大森英彦], a disciple of Ōmori Teruhide [大森英秀], and a solid gold menuki depicting in-yo chrysanthemums. Blade: Passed the Hozon Token shinsa in 2024. Koshirae: Passed the Tokubetsu Hozon Toso shinsa in 2024. |
