Chounsai Tsunatoshi (1st generation) [長雲斎綱俊 初代]was born in Yonezawa, Dewa Province, in 1798. He was the son of Kato Kunihide [加藤国秀] and the younger brother of Kato Tsunahide [加藤綱英]. Together with his elder brother Tsunahide, he was a swordsmith for the Uesugi family of Yonezawa Domain. He started forging swords at Uesugi's Edo residence in 1823. His style was mainly Bizen tradition, and he excelled in choji and gunome hamon with nioi-deki, and produced beautiful jigane with dense small itame grain. This wakizashi is a Toran-ha blade made by Tsunatoshi at the age of 24, when he was in his prime and full of enthusiasm. It has tama-yaki on both sides as if to show off his skill. It passed the Tokubetsu Hozon Token shinsa in 2005. It comes with a high-quality wakizashi koshirae with a dark brown isokusa-nuri kizami scabbard. |
